Translating the travelogue O turista aprendiz in the Amazon

The goal of this article is to comment on the translation of the travel records of Mario de Andrade in the Amazon. Nine entries of the author´s travel were translated, since his arrival in the city of Belem, on board of Pedro 1, on May 18th until his departure on May 26th. Those are records of the author´s travel, registered as a travelogue in a small pocket notebook, later compiled in the book O Turista Aprendiz. In his notes, Mário de Andrade presents a concept of Brazilianness, by keeping a close eye on the Brazilian folklore manifestations, through music, cullinary, popular festivals, all portrayed with informality, simplicity in a language that broadly reflects the Brazilian colloquial speech. Due to his stylistic aspects, Mário de Andrade’s text represents a challenge to translation, besides the necessity to devise a translation strategy, in our view, consonant with the author’s style.
