Resumen

The goal of this article is to comment on the translation of chapter XXII of A Voyage up the River Amazon, by William H. Edwards, as well as the translation strategies proposed. In the chapter, Edwards deals with the bureaucracy, tax, immigration, climate, and the white man needed for a civilizing mission of Amazonia. The prejudice against the Portuguese, the indigenous people and the blacks pervades the text in a more or less explicit way. The prejudice, the arrogance, and the civilizing raptures are not sparse in the travel literature of that period; and, in our translation, we highlight as much Edwards’ intolerance as the impressionist trait of his narrative.

Concluiu doutorado em Teoria Literária, na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, em 2007, e pós-doutorado em Estudos da Tradução, na Vrije Universiteit Brussel, em 2018 . É atualmente professora na Universidade Federal do Ceará, onde atua na área de Literaturas em língua inglesa, Estudos Literários da Tradução, em especial, autoria e estilo, tradução e recepção de literatura brasileira no estrangeiro e tradução comentada e anotada. É uma das fundadoras e primeira coordenadora da POET - Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução (UFC),coordenadora do GT de Estudos da Tradução de 2018-2020, membro da CLIV (Centrum voor Literatuur in vertaling) desde 2017.

Michel Emmanuel Félix François, Universidade Federal do Ceará

Possui graduação em Administração Postal pela Escola Superior de Administração Postal (1985), especialização em Análise Organizacional pela Fundação Getúlio Vargas (1990), graduação em Letras pela Universidade Estadual do Ceará (2000) e mestrado em Lingüística Aplicada pela Universidade Estadual do Ceará (2005). Doutor em Estudos da Tradução na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Literaturas Estrangeiras Modernas
